Phase 3 of the Valneva vaccine study opened in Bristol in April 2021. The vaccine is the only inactivated, adjuvanted COVID-19 vaccine in clinical development in Europe.
Will is one of the volunteers taking part in the study. This is his story of taking part in research.
Will talking:
"I decided to take part in the Valneva vaccine study mainly because the pandemic has affected everyone so negatively and we all just want to get back to regular everyday life now, and I feel a key way that we're going to do this is through the vaccination programmes. So I saw the opportunity to take part in the Valneva study in Bristol and I felt like it would be a really good way to do my bit."
How did you find taking part in the study?
Will talking:
"I found taking part in the trial a really positive experience, it was really easy to sign up and all the information they provided painted a really clear picture on what I could expect to happen. So I went through the screening process and had my first jab already and I've got my second jab coming up. During the actual screening and the process of getting the first jab, the research team was so helpful and they made me feel really comfortable, so they made me feel comfortable taking blood from me for the first time, going through all the pre-trial checks and after I had my jab they gave me an information pack to record my temperature and my symptoms for a week afterwards, and they also gave me information for a 24-hour emergency line in case I was feeling any COVID like symptoms or any other side effects at all."
What would your message be to anyone who was thinking of taking part in research?
Will talking:
"If someone was thinking about volunteering for a vaccine trial, I would definitely recommend it. It's been such a positive experience and it is so easy to sign up and take part. The research team are so supportive, any questions you have, or concerns, they're there to support you throughout the whole trial and it's just a great way to make a difference to people's lives."
