On Thursday 6th June 2024, The NIHR Clinical Research Network, North West Coast (NIHR CRN NWC) held a ‘Research Extravaganza’ event, inviting just under 300 attendees across the region, marking 10 years of health and social care research achievements. The event was held at The Hilton Hotel in Liverpool and the intention of the event was to reflect on the evolution of the network since its launch in 2014, and to celebrate the dedication, hard work and unwavering commitment of our partners, researchers and scholars.
Over the past decade, NIHR CRN NWC has supported patients, the public and health and care organisations across the geographical region to participate in high-quality research. This has been delivered in a variety of health, social and community settings thereby advancing knowledge and improving patient care. As a network, CRN NWC have worked innovatively to enable a system change in the delivery of health and care research. Rather than this being delivered by individual organisations, the Network has encouraged collaboration and the development of high-quality partnerships between organisations including those associated with the delivery of NHS primary, secondary and tertiary care, higher education institutions, social care organisations, community groups, charity, faith and voluntary organisations and local councils. Support has been provided to enhance capacity and capability with respect to research delivery and to align research to the unmet health and care needs of our population.
More recently, the Network has supported the effective delivery of commercial life sciences research in response to Lord James O’Shaughnessy’s review to improve the efficiency of clinical trial delivery, to ensure our partners recruit successfully to time and target and to strengthen local infrastructure and resource. The Network’s research bus, Kitty, has provided another tool to support a reduction in the barriers to research participation and promote wider inclusion to increase community representation. CRN NWC’s journey has been filled with challenges and triumphs, each step bringing us closer to our vision of making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our population through cutting-edge research. We are proud of our partners’ responses to the numerous changes that have taken place, the pioneering projects that have set new standards in our fields, the collaborative efforts that have fostered a spirit of partnership and camaraderie, and the brilliant minds whose passion for discovery has driven our success.
On behalf of CRN NWC, we would like to extend our gratitude to all the researchers, partners, and supporters who have played a crucial role in our journey. Your contributions have been invaluable, and your dedication has inspired us to drive progress, embrace change and ensure that research has a positive impact on our population . Here’s to many more years of partnership working, innovation and success as we embark on our new journey in RDN North West.
