Researchers at the University of Oxford have found that blood clots may be a cause of cognitive problems in people who have had COVID-19.
People with persistent thinking, concentration and memory problems who had been hospitalised with COVID-19 were invited to take part in the PHOSP-COVID trial.
Participants were offered a blood test to look for indicators of cognitive problems, given memory tests and asked what their own thoughts on their memory were.
Researchers discovered that participants had high levels of two proteins associated with blood clotting which suggests that blood clots are the cause of post-COVID cognitive problems.
A total of 1,118 participants were recruited, including 168 to the Churchill Hospital in Oxford.
