Last year saw a 47% increase in clinical trials taking place in the East Midlands, according to data published by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN).

Research teams working within the NHS, social care and community settings across the region worked to deliver 792 studies in 2021/22, a significant increase on the 539 studies delivered in the previous year. In total, more than 2,300 studies have been delivered over the past five years.

More than 75,000 people took part in clinical research in the East Midlands during 2021/22. Whilst this is a decrease in the number of participants in the previous year following the huge push to recruit people into urgent COVID-19 research, during the past five years more than 360,000 people have taken part in studies in the East Midlands alone.

Nationally, the NIHR CRN annual statistics show that almost 1.3 million people took part in more than 4,5000 studies in England during 2021/22, with more than 28,000 of these participants supporting commercial studies sponsored by the life sciences industry.
