Professor Margaret Johnson, co-Clinical Director at CRN North Thames, has been awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in The Queen's Birthday Honours.
Professor Johnson, consultant in thoracic and HIV medicine at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and professor of HIV medicine at UCL, has been recognised for services to the NHS and people with HIV.
Professor Johnson said: "I'm so pleased to have been given this honour - what I've achieved in HIV care would not have been possible without my fantastic team.
"I think what I'm most proud of is that HIV care is now mainstream, it's not hidden away. At the Ian Charleson Day Centre we have a multi-speciality approach - we run joint clinics with specialists from different areas, so we provide patients with holistic care. I'm also really proud of our track record on research - our patients have participated in early clinical trials and that's saved so many lives."
Professor Johnson has been co-Clinical Director of CRN North Thames since November 2018, and involved with the Network since its inception in 2014. A passionate research advocate, she has supported many patients through clinical trials.
She said: “HIV is a prime example of public participation in research changing lives for the better, but we know that research can benefit patients from across the disease spectrum.
“I am fortunate that, in my role as co-Clinical Director at CRN North Thames, I am able to work with our dedicated partners both within and outside the NHS to deliver research to improve the lives of our population.”
Dr Sharon Barrett, Chief Operating Officer at CRN North Thames, said: “We are incredibly lucky to have someone as dedicated as Margaret as our co-Clinical Director, and I congratulate her on behalf of all our staff on this well-deserved recognition.
“An organisation like ours could not wish to have someone more dedicated to research serving the role that she does.”
