A patient in North West London is the first to be recruited globally to a new study investigating the use of oral nutritional supplements (ONS).
The study — supported locally by the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) North West London — welcomed its first participant at GP Direct in Harrow, London.
Participants will try the supplements AYMES SWIFT (high energy) and AYMES SWIFT FIBRE (high energy and high fibre). They will be assessed for tolerance (bowel movements and side effects) and acceptability (amount consumed and sensory qualities such as appearance, odour, flavour, taste, and texture).
Dr Umar Khan, GP Direct, said:
"We’re very proud to be the first global recruiters to this study. We’re passionate about research and very keen to offer opportunities to take part in innovative trials like this to our patients and the local community.
"This trial in particular could result in real benefits for people who require supplementary oral nutritional support, potentially leading to these supplements being authorised for prescription in the community."
Sandra O’Sullivan, Research Delivery Manager for Primary and Community Care at the CRN North West London, said:
"GP surgeries such as GP Direct play a vital role in delivering research in the community. It’s really great news to see the team recruit the first patient globally to this study.
"I know Dr Khan and Mr Hussein and the team are committed to delivering research that benefits the local community and beyond. This achievement is testament to their commitment."
Being the first to recruit a patient in a trial is a key performance indicator as it shows the CRN North West London and its partners can support the rapid setup and recruitment of studies.
This study is recruiting people over the age of 18 who require nutritional supplementation. Participants are required to consume either AYMES SWIFT or AYMES SWIFT FIBRE for 28 days, after completing a general health assessment including a hand grip strength test and a body weight check.
An acceptability and preference questionnaire is completed on day seven, along with a body weight check and a hand grip strength test. A further assessment is completed on day 28.
