Wigan residents were invited to kickstart their 2024 at a health research awareness event featuring advice on living well with some of the most common long-term conditions facing the borough.
CRN Greater Manchester hosted the event in collaboration with the research team from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL). It was held in Platt Bridge Community Centre on Friday 5 January.
The afternoon featured short talks from expert clinicians and NIHR researchers from the region, Dr Abdul Ashish and Professor Phil Kalra. Their sections focused on long-term health conditions prevalent among people living in Wigan.
Dr Ashish, Respiratory Consultant and Deputy Medical Director at WWL, spoke about living well with respiratory disease, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma.
Professor Kalra, Consultant Nephrologist and Director of Research at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, presented on conditions affecting the heart, and kidney care.
Running throughout the event was the theme of health and care research and how getting involved can help you learn more about a condition that affects you.
Attendees heard how taking part in research can make a difference to patients and the NHS by helping to improve diagnosis, treatments, care and quality of life - now and for future generations.
WWL’s research team were in attendance to explain more, alongside the Research for the Future team, who help people find out about and take part in health and care research, and the NIHR’s Join Dementia Research team. Age UK’s Wigan borough team were also in attendance to speak with people.
