A group which has worked with patients and communities to drive up COVID-19 vaccination rates, identify local health issues and equalities and focus priorities for the Clinical Research Network West Midlands (CRN WM) has been shortlisted for a national award.
The Network’s Race, Diversity and Inclusion Research Group has been shortlisted in the Improving Health Outcomes for Minority Ethnic Communities Category at this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards, recognising its outstanding contribution to healthcare.
Following two of the toughest years in the health and social care sector, the Network continues to champion diversity in research amidst challenges that the health and social care sector is facing.
Clinicians and academics partnered with the CRN WM to set up systematic working ensuring that the voices of the local under-served populations are at the forefront of research. The West Midlands Race, Diversity and Inclusion Research Group, focused on racial disparity and ethnicity, plays an influential role in research undertaken with ethnic minority communities.
This group has successfully collaborated with patient and public communities to enhance uptake of COVID-19 vaccines and has developed a programme to enable public voices and help identify local health issues and inequalities and local research priorities.
Supratik Basu, Professor of Haematology at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and a founder member of the Group said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award, shining a light on the collaborative efforts and dedication of our colleagues over the last 12 months to successfully implement this diversity project. We are committed to delivering improved outcomes for patients, and to be chosen among the other incredible nominees is a wonderful achievement.
“This nomination has been a tremendous boost to all the partners involved in this group and I am sure it will bolster our continued efforts to improve our services. I would like to pay tribute to Pauline Boyle, Professor Matthew Brookes and Dr Moe Shaikh at the CRN for setting up this initiative.”
