CRN South London’s Patient and Public Interaction and Engagement (PPIE) Manager believes Join Dementia Research (JDR) has been a vital tool in supporting clinical trials.
The NIHR’s Join Dementia Research service, which was set up six years ago today, is a tool that allows people to register their interest in research into the condition and they can then be matched to suitable studies.
A total of 50,000 volunteers have signed up to JDR since the tool was launched six years ago. The Network’s PPIE Manager, Neha Modha, said:
“Everybody needs to have the chance to take part in research, and JDR has made this possible for thousands of people. These studies can make a real difference to the lives of those who are living with the condition.
“The more people who register with the service, the faster researchers can help to make a difference to everyone affected by dementia. I’d encourage anybody living with this condition to sign up to JDR so that they can find out about what opportunities are available.”
Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain function. It is estimated that more than 850,000 people are living with the condition in the UK.
CRN South London’s Join Dementia Research Lead Amy McLachlan said: “I am very proud to see JDR celebrate its sixth birthday, and our Network is so grateful to everyone who has registered to take part in NIHR-supported dementia research.
“However, there is still more work to do as we need even more people to register their interest in dementia research so that researchers can develop new treatments and help everyone to understand how best to care for people living with this condition.”
Anyone over the age of 18 can sign up to JDR.
