A pair of research practitioners have spoken about their pride in working in a profession that can improve south Londoners' lives.

Krystle Thomas Vedat and Serah Duro work for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network South London’s direct delivery team as research practitioners. The direct delivery team increases the opportunities for people to take part in health and social care research in non-NHS settings such as schools, prisons, care homes, GP practices, etc.

The duo are urging people to consider a career in public health, social care and community research as part of the NIHR’s Your Path in Research campaign. The campaign aims to encourage health and care professionals to deliver research as part of their careers. Krystle said:

“The world and disease are in a constant state of flux. We need research trailblazers to find ways to adapt to emerging conditions, build on existing knowledge to continually make enhancements, reduce health inequalities, and eliminate or lessen the impact of diseases. For many facing health challenges, research offers hope. It is an honour to have a small part in improving everyone’s quality of life.”

Better research leads to better services for the public, which is why the NIHR encourages organisations, social care and public health professionals, practitioners and workers to play an active role in research. Serah continued:

“What excites me about working in research is knowing I am part of a dedicated team making a huge difference in people’s lives now and in the future."

The NIHR has launched Link and Learn. Link and Learn is a matchmaking service connecting public health and social care practitioners with researchers in the field. Using this service is an excellent way for anyone new to public health and social care research to gain unique insight, exchange experiences, and ask questions. Sign up on Mentorloop.
